What is the best month to visit the Algerian Sahara?

Quick answer

November to February. Days are warm and clear, nights are cold enough for a fire, and the light is at its best for photography. December and January are the peak of the season. From late spring the desert becomes dangerously hot and expeditions stop.

The Algerian Sahara has a season, and it is winter. From roughly November to February the desert is at its best: daytime temperatures that are warm rather than punishing, dry clear air, and long low light that transforms the sandstone of the Tadrart and the Tassili.

December and January are the heart of it. Expect genuinely cold nights — the desert loses its heat fast after sunset and camps can drop close to freezing, which surprises people who packed only for the daytime. A proper jacket, a hat and layers matter more here than in most winter destinations.

November and February are the shoulders and are excellent: slightly warmer nights, marginally fewer travellers, and the same clear conditions. March can still work, and is when the wind picks up.

From late spring the window closes. By May daytime heat in the deep south becomes a serious physiological risk, and through the summer it is simply not a place for tourism — operators do not run desert programmes then, and the restriction is a safety judgement rather than a commercial one.

This is the inverse of the northern coast, which is at its best from late spring to early autumn. It is also why a trip that wants both the Mediterranean and the desert works best in the shoulders, and why a winter trip to Algeria is far more rewarding than most people expect.
